Creating and sending a credit note via Peppol
Is there a mistake on an invoice you already sent? Then you can no longer change that invoice. You correct it with a credit note.
Why can’t you change an invoice?
An issued invoice is final: your client has received it and may already have booked it. Any correction must therefore be a separate document, with its own number and date, that refers to the original invoice.
When do you issue a credit note?
- The invoice has a wrong amount, quantity or VAT rate.
- You give a discount afterwards, or your client returns something.
- The invoice went to the wrong client or was sent twice.
You can credit the whole invoice or only part of it. If a correct invoice still has to follow, you create it afterwards as a new invoice.
What must a credit note show?
- The words “credit note” and its own sequential number.
- A reference to the invoice it corrects (number and date).
- The amount credited, with VAT.
And via Peppol?
A credit note is a separate document type in Peppol. If the invoice went via Peppol, send the credit note via Peppol too, so your client’s software links the two.
How it works in Faktuno
Open the invoice and choose More → Create credit note. Faktuno copies the details and adds the reference to the invoice automatically. You adjust what you want to credit and send it via Peppol, or by email if your client is not on Peppol.
