Due date and payment terms on an invoice
How long does your client have to pay? That is what the due date on your invoice says. A clear due date prevents arguments and makes a payment reminder easier later.
What is the difference?
- The payment term is the number of days your client gets, for example 30 days.
- The due date is the date on which that ends: invoice date plus payment term.
Which term do you choose?
- Agree a term with your client, in your quote or your general terms, and put it on the invoice too.
- A term of 30 days is common. What is still allowed in a given situation is set by the late payment law. Ask your accountant what applies to you.
- Nothing agreed? Between businesses in Belgium a payment term of 30 days applies in principle, counted from receipt of the invoice.
- Stricter rules apply to private persons, see how to send a payment reminder.
What goes on the invoice?
The due date and your bank account number (IBAN) belong on it. With a structured payment reference your client can pay easily and you recognise the payment straight away.
How it works in Faktuno
- Under My company you choose your default Payment term (days). It is set to 30 by default.
- On every invoice Faktuno works out the due date itself. As long as the invoice has not been sent, you can change it.
- You can add your general terms as a PDF, so they go along automatically with your invoices and quotes.
- Is the due date past and nothing paid? You send a payment reminder with one click. With the Pro plan this can also happen automatically.
